ESL Academic Preparation places emphasis on reading, writing, grammar, listening and speaking to prepare students for academic High School classes in Canada. The course is taught by British Columbia certified Academic English teachers in Canada, and includes 1 on 1 coaching and proctored mid-term and final assessments.

Acceptance to The High School at Vancouver Island University will be guaranteed upon successful completion of ESL Academic Preparation, and students will receive 4 academic credits per level completed towards their BC Dogwood diploma.

This course is:

  • Self-directed: set your own timelines.
  • Self-paced: complete a level as quickly/slowly as you like. It will take 12 weeks to complete one level, based on completion of 1 unit per week. It is recommended that you study 10 hours/ week.
  • 12 years and above
  • Passport photo page or National Identification document
  • Completed True North application form 
  • English online assessment (to be sent after the application has been processed)
  • Ongoing intakes. Courses start every Monday.
  • There is no application deadline. However, we recommend applying one week before the start date.

  1. Click Create Account. Fill in the requested Account Details. Click Create Account at the bottom of the page.
  2. Check your email inbox for an email that you will use to validate your new account.
  3. Sign into your account using the email address and password you provided.
  4. Click Create a New Application.
  5. From the drop down menu, select the program you are applying for.
    Fill the remainder of the requested fields to create the application.
