The program at The High School at VIU is academically focused with an emphasis on 21st Century Learning Skills. These skills encompass the following:

  • Interdisciplinary teaching and learning
  • Project and inquiry based learning for deep understanding
  • Development of effective communication skills
  • Intercultural awareness
  • Service, social justice and leadership competencies

What We Do:

The High School at Vancouver Island University offers a unique opportunity for Canadian and international students in Grades 10 to 12 to complete the BC Dogwood Diploma from an intercultural perspective. Bringing together students from Canada and around the world, The High School at VIU seeks to develop in students a heightened sense of responsibility and respect for their academic, physical, emotional, ethical and personal leadership growth.

This is done through the interconnected learning pathways of Studies in Knowledge and Understanding, Studies in Global and Local Citizenship, Studies in Leadership and Capacity Building and Deep Learning Capstone Studies. Infused within these pathways is an expectation that students critically examine their personal world views and deepen their understanding of what it means to be an action-oriented global citizen.

Deep Learning Capstone Studies is a particularly important foundational element of the program at The High School at VIU. This required component is a year-long research project that allows students to explore an area of interest and passion in depth. In the first year of Deep Learning Capstone, students work in collaborative teams of 3 or 4 on a project of mutual concern. In their second year, students will have the option of working in a team or individually.Third year Deep Learning Capstone projects are individual research endeavours. At the end of each school year students present their results at the Deep Learning Exposition.

The High School at VIU prepares students from around the world for entry into Vancouver Island University and other North American universities. Graduates of The High School at Vancouver Island University are guaranteed admission to Vancouver Island University programs upon satisfactory completion of course requirements. Students receive assistance in planning post-secondary admissions to university and have opportunities to take university courses in their Grade 12 year.
