To qualify for admission to The High School at Vancouver Island University, students:
• must have completed Grade 9, or equivalent;
• must turn 15 years of age by December 31 following a September enrollment;
• must be under 19 years of age.
Transfer Standing Credit
Transfer Standing Credit and Equivalency Credit for courses completed at other schools will be given to students who provide the necessary supporting documents and demonstrate competence.
For students aged 14 and 15, TOEFL Junior is the preferred assessment. A minimum level of 3 will be required for direct acceptance. Level 1 or 2 will require an additional Skype assessment with an ELL teacher.
Students older than 15 may submit one of the following options:
- Vericant (minimum level 2)
- IELTS (minimum level 3.5)
- TOEFL (minimum level 31)
The school reserves the right to require a Skype meeting at any point in the admission process.
English assessments conducted on Skype will determine if students have a minimal level of English conversation and basic reading/writing, and placed in an appropriate level of English Language Learning (ELL). These English instruction classes will be supplemented with courses that allow the student to develop and experience English with confidence.
Start Date and Application Deadline
The school year starts in September and runs until end of June. Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis.
To apply for admission to The High School at Vancouver Island University, please follow these steps:

- Click Create Account. Fill in the requested Account Details. Click Create Account at the bottom of the page.
- Check your email inbox for an email that you will use to validate your new account.
- Sign into your account using the email address and password you provided.
- Click Create a New Application.
- From the drop down menu, select the program you are applying for.
Fill the remainder of the requested fields to create the application.
If you are an agent, click on Agents Start Here.
Sign into the site using the agent login details provided by our Administration office.
If you have not been issued agent login details, please email email@example.com.
In order to submit an application, the documents listed below are required. If you do not upload these documents into the online application system, you cannot complete the application process. If you do not submit a complete application within ten (10) days, the partial application will be automatically deleted.
- Transcripts or report cards. You must have a record of grades for the last two years, translated into English. You will only able to upload one document, so please ensure all pages are scanned as a single document.
- Passport photo page. Please scan the passport photo page of the applicant’s passport, if they have a passport already. This allows us to double-check the applicant’s information to ensure that all correspondence is correct.
- Student Agreement. The parent(s) and the applicant must sign our agreement. Please download the Student Agreement, have it signed in ink, and scanned as a PDF or JPEG file only.
While these documents are optional they may assist us in making an admission decision should we require additional information. They must be submitted as single documents in PDF or JPEG files only and less than 5MB each.
- Letter of Recommendation. Please have a teacher, school counselor, or Headmaster/Principal write a letter of recommendation for the applicant. This letter should be on school letterhead and identify the student and their strong points. If this letter is longer than one page, make sure you scan all pages as a single document.
- Custodian document. If the applicant will not be part of our homestay program, or if they choose not to use our custodianship service, they must assign a custodian. This custodian must be a Canadian citizen or Permanent Resident, over 25 years old, and must live full time in the Nanaimo area.
- English assessment for international students. This is a requirement for all international applicants. For students aged 14 and 15, TOEFL Junior is the preferred assessment. A minimum level of 3 will be required for direct acceptance. Level 1 or 2 will require an additional Skype assessment with an ELL teacher. - Proof of Canadian Residency. If applicable please upload a copy of the parent citizenship documents as noted in the Student Agreement - Status of Parent/Guardian Form
The Next Steps
Students may be required to complete a Skype interview to assess their level of English prior to acceptance at The High School. This is a new requirement that helps us to determine students abilities and placement in the program.
A Conditional Letter of Acceptance and invoice will be sent advising the total amount of tuition and homestay fees payable, and how and when to pay.
Once tuition fees are paid, we will send an Official Letter of Acceptance and Statutory Declaration of Custodianship (if applicable) as well as further information about studying at The High School at Vancouver Island University and living in Nanaimo.
Obtain Student Authorization
All students must obtain a Student Permit from the Canadian Embassy or Consulate in the country where the student resides. When in Canada, it is the student's responsibility to keep the Student Authorization updated and current. Student Authorizations must be renewed six weeks before the expiry date and may be renewed in Canada. To attain this document, students must provide the Embassy with:
the Official Letter of Acceptance from The High School at Vancouver Island University stating that the required fees have been paid;
- a bank statement indicating that the student or parents have sufficient funds to support the student's period of study; and
a notarized Custodianship Letter
The High School at Vancouver Island University will issue a letter as proof of registration for those students who will be continuing their studies at The High School. Immigration authorities have the right to inquire about a student's record of attendance and achievement at school. If attendance or achievement has been poor, a student may be refused renewal of the Student Authorization and may be required to leave Canada.
Please note: For a period less than 6 months, students will only need a visitor's visa. International students may attend only the school named on the Authorization.
All international students under 19 years of age are required by Canada Immigration to have a legal guardian who is a Canadian citizen and resides in Canada. You may choose to appoint the school principal as custodian if the student is participating in the VIU homestay program. Parents may also choose to appoint a family member as the custodian and provide a notarized custodianship letter. Parents should check with the Canadian Embassy or Consulate in their country of residence for specific guardianship requirements.
The Government of British Columbia requires all international students to have medical and accident insurance while studying in British Columbia. The cost will be included on the invoice once the student is accepted. Students may use their own insurance provider, but must show proof (in English) of valid medical insurance coverage.
